Pests are a nuisance; some might sting you, bite or even transmit diseases. Some of them can even cause severe structural damage to your house. There are three things which are needed by pests for them to survive. These are harborage, food, and water. Pests will move to another place when these conditions or elements are not available. However, it is challenging to remove some of these things at times. These are some of the tips that will help you in controlling pest in case you have a pest problem.
Examining the roofs
The first thing you should do is to examine your roofs. Make sure that your roofs do not have any leakages. Additionally, you need to ensure that all the gutters and downspouts are fully functional and the pies are taking away all the water which is being drained at the base of the house.
Pruning the bushes and trees
Any bushes and trees around the house should be pruned regularly. Ensure that there are no branches which are touching your exterior walls, porches, garage, carports or outbuildings. These branches are breeding grounds for the pests.
Inspecting the foundation vents
It is very imperative to inspect the foundation vents. This will ensure that they are in good condition and secure. Well maintained vents help in increasing the ventilation of the house. A vapour carrier should be put in the crawlspace if its ground is damp. This will help in minimizing the airborne moisture. Apart from this, it is essential to make sure that your crawl space windows and doors are tightly shut.
Avoid storing the building material
Avoid stacking firewood or building material near the house. This will help you in getting rid of the pest. These things can provide harborage for the pests. Besides, pests can also feed on such materials.
Always ensure that the crawlspace or the foundation does not have any stagnant water around it. Most are the times when you find water collecting in the crawl space since it is at a lower level as compared to the exterior grade surrounding it. This water can be removed by fixing an exterior drainage or by use of a French drain.
All the unused pots, containers and boxes around your house should be checked. Any water found in such containers should be emptied.
All the garbage containers should be latched and the put away from the house. Again, you should make a habit of cleaning the house on a regular basis as well as dumping the garbage.
